Museum of Folk Architecture

The Folk Architecture Museum in Olsztynek is the largest ethnographic park in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. In the open-air museum you can admire numerous wooden buildings that were brought from East Prussia, from four historical regions: Warmia, Masuria, Powiśle and Little Lithuania.

In the open-air museum you can see residential huts, farm and industrial buildings, churches, a mill with windmills and farm animals: sheep, goats, chickens. In residential buildings and farm buildings, you can admire exhibits depicting the life of the inhabitants of former Polish villages. There is also a herb pump room in the ethnographic park, where you can enjoy delicious herbal teas and refreshing lemonades.

Art glassworks in Olsztynek

Museum of Warmia and Mazury, Olsztyn Castle

The Museum of Warmia and Mazury has existed since 1945. It is located in the Castle of the Warmian Chapter and contains collections mainly from museums in the former East Prussia. The museum gives the opportunity to get to know the history, traditions and culture of the region better. Numerous monuments from the region of Warmia and Mazury have been collected there, which create exhibitions related to the region.

The Museum of Warmia and Mazury has exhibits in the fields of: archeology, numismatics, ancient and modern art, artistic craftsmanship, writing and folk culture. Inside the castle there are also collections of gothic sculptures, religious paintings of Warmia, Dutch portraits, bell and bell products, and contemporary graphics. The exhibits are presented in the interiors of the Warmia Chapter Castle, where Nicolaus Copernicus once resided, who in the years 1516-1521 was the administrator of the Warmia Chapter property. In turn, the collection of the library houses the only medical incunabula in Poland from the library of the famous astronomer.

Planetarium olsztyńskie zostało otwarte 19 lutego 1973 roku, w pięćsetną rocznicę urodzin Mikołaja Kopernika. Planetarium zbudowane zostało jako pomnik w hołdzie Mikołajowi Kopernikowi, który mieszkał w Olsztynie przez kilka lat, pełniąc funkcję administratora okolicznych dóbr Kapituły Warmińskiej.

St. John in Orzechowo

Neo-Gothic Church of st. John the Baptist is located in the village of Orzechowo and is considered one of the most beautiful in the Olsztynek commune. In 2000, the church in Orzechowo was entered into the register of monuments, on the list of cultural assets.

Church of Saint John the Baptist was built in 1910 and the tower was completed in 1913. Inside the church you can admire a baroque altar and two chandeliers in the shape of bells. The older bell is wooden and commemorates the villagers who died during the First World War. There are 43 names of the fallen inhabitants on it. The second chandelier was made of deer antlers and donated in 2010 by a hunting club on the occasion of the centenary of the church. Inside the church there is also a neo-Gothic cabinet confessional and a pre-war organ. The stained glass windows show scenes from the life of John the Baptist, the patron saint of the church. There is a cemetery by the church from the beginning of the 20th century, consisting of the old and new parts.

Orzechowo, a ghost village

Orzechowo - "ghost village", lies in a large clearing surrounded by swamps and forests.
The only surviving and renovated building in this village is the old school, which has been transformed into a forester's lodge. The layout of the village with the remains of rural buildings, the church and the cemetery are protected. The beauty of the landscape of this region attracts many tourists. Numerous bicycle tourist routes lead through Orzechowo.

The village of Orzechowo was probably founded in 1575 as a mill settlement inhabited by Poles. Historical sources say that it was described as a "royal peasant village" inhabited by 85 residents. In 1939, 14 families lived here. There was a school, a parish house for elderly people and a forge in the village. In 1953, Primate Stefan Wyszyński was resting in Orzechowo (he stayed there for 10 days). At that time, 20 women and one man lived in the village (the village was already half depopulated). In 1977, the last inhabitants (Biehs family) left the village for Germany.

Marian Sanctuary in Gietrzwałd

Gietrzwałd is a picturesque village in Warmia. This town is famous for the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which have so far been the only one in Poland officially recognized by the Church. Every year, believers from all over the country make pilgrimages to Gietrzwałd.

The apparitions in Gietrzwałd lasted from June 27 to September 16, 1877. Our Lady appeared to two little girls from poor families: thirteen-year-old Justyna Szafryńska and twelve-year-old Barbara Samulowska.
The Mother of God spoke to them in Polish, which was of particular importance in the territories annexed by Prussia, which were subjected to intensive Germanization at that time.

Museum of the Battle of Grunwald

The museum is located in the town of Grunwald, exactly in the Grunwald fields, where the famous Battle of Grunwald took place on July 15, 1410, in which the combined Polish - Lithuanian - Ruthenian army under the command of Władysław Jagiełło won the Teutonic army led by Ulrich von Jungingen. The museum is also the organizer of many educational and historical events, including the most important annual event - "Grunwald Days" and the staging of the Battle of Grunwald.

In the museum you can see the permanent exhibition: "The Great War with the Teutonic Order 1409-1411" and admire such exhibits as: maps, plans, drawings, photographs, copies of medieval weapons and weapons. The archaeological part presents the monuments discovered in the fields of Grunwald: crossbow bolt heads, bow arrowheads, fragments of swords, spurs and fragments of an armored glove, unique in Polish museum collections. In addition, the museum houses an exhibition: "Grunwald - 600 years of glory" showing copies of documents, maps and plans concerning the most important events related to the Teutonic Order and the Kingdom of Poland. In the museum, you can also admire copies of the Polish, Lithuanian and Teutonic banners reconstructed on the basis of iconographic sources. Visiting the museum is enriched by the screening of a fragment of A. Ford's film "The Teutonic Knights" depicting the Battle of Grunwald.

The Forest Arboretum in Kudypy
